Root Work Revisited

Root Work Revisited (Glue, Paper and Photoshop, 2016):

Root Work Revisited is inspired by Monica Rekas’s “root work (work that root)“. I made a book version of her performance at the 2016 edition of the HTMLLES festival. During her performance, Rekas performed a healing ritual on to reclaim her body from colonialism. In my take on her piece, I took several adult images of myself and contrasted them with old paintings of settlers arriving to Canada alongside negative comments I have received online. I wanted my project to celebrate the Asian female body and reclaim how it is depicted in classical works of art and online. After completing this project, I lit the candles on top of my book on fire and sealed the images of myself away forever.
